Ministry of Justice proposals mean that some 75% of the 1,700 firms currently doing criminal legal aid work will be removed from the market. Needless to say, it will be a fundamental change if it goes ahead. See [2010] LSG 25 March 1.
Last year, the Law Society had far-reaching plans that would have allowed law firms to advise rival clients on the same deal, but such a fundamental redrafting of the conflict rules has now been abandoned. See [2010] LSG 1 April 1. As far as insurance is concerned, the Law Society has issued a statement on the situation involving Quinn Insurance, which went into administration in April. For the time being, it seems that Quinn Insurance can continue trading, and that PII cover issued by Quinn remains in full force and effect (ie there is no need to replace such policies at the present time). In addition, the Law Society has issued a note about ATE cover purportedly provided by LLPP Insure Ltd, pointing out that the cover is not underwritten by HSBC, and that clients with policies issued by that company should seek clarification. See www.lawsociety.org.uk.
