Apparently, half of all consumers would be willing to obtain legal advice from
banks or supermarkets – which is why it would be unwise to underestimate
the threat that they pose to many high street firms.
For instance, the Co-op
has made no secret of its intention to extend its legal services into private
client, conveyancing, estate management and will writing. [2006] LSG 21
September 3; 14 September 5.
Many commentators have described the referral rules as unworkable. What
seems quite clear is that they are being largely ignored (over a third of firms fail
to disclose referral fees, and nearly half fail to get an undertaking from the
introducer to comply with the referral code). See [2006] LSG 21 September 1.
